Our Respects to Miss Moneypenny

Call me crazy. It won’t be the first nor last time. Today’s blog is in honor of Lois Maxwell, the actress that was best known for her role as Miss Moneypenny,

The Associated Press reports that her first appearance was in 1962 as the secretary to M, the head of the secret service. We know her character well. Many of us admired her wit and professionalism.. and understood her platonic love of James Bond– Agent 007.

I bet we can all think of characters in TV or Movies that were secretaries, receptionist or admin support.

Here is a list that I came up with… I’m sure I’ve missed some great ones.

1. Della Street- played by Barbara Hale- TV Show- Perry Mason
2. Marcia Wallace -TV show- Bob Newhart
3. Loni Anderson- WKRP in Cincinnati
4. Diane Wiest – Movie- The Associate (one of my all time favorite characters representing our profession. If you haven’t seen this movie.. rent it .. just to see her take on organizing files!

5. Anne Hathaway- Devil Wears Prada

6.Maggie Gyllenhaal- Secretary (movie)… Definitely NOT for the prude or faint of heart.

7. Gary Burghoff- Corporal Walter “Radar” O’Reilly. He really epitomized the many challenges of administrative support, no?

8. Annie Potts as Janine Melnitz in Ghostbusters

9 Lilly Tomlin as Deborah Fiderer, President Bartlett’s 2nd secretary in West Wing

10. Kathryn Joosten as Delores Landingham, President Bartlett’s 1st secretary in West Wing

So many.. and probably so many not mentioned here.

Here’s one I want to check out!

Movie Title: Wife vs. Secretary- 1936… Starring Jean Harlow as the secretary! Clark Gable as her boss and Myrna Loy as his wife! Wow.

Please send me any secretarial/admin support characters in movie or tv that you know of..

  1. Loved this post. I did a quick search on Google for “secretaries in movies” and the titles that came up were Hot Secretary Movies, Strap-On Secretaries, Office Fantasies and SecretaryX. Not exactly what you were looking for. Obviously the secretary has gotten a bad name over the years. I liked yours much better and remember most if not all of those movies and the secretary had an important role to play.
